September 09, 2010
Jimmy Armfield
During his school days at Arnold Jimmy played more rugby than he did football, but fortunately for the footballing world Jimmy decided to take up football professionally. Jimmy began playing at right wing both at school and in his early days at Blackpool but due injuries in the 'A' team he took up the role as full back and found the position that we know Jimmy well in. He made his league debut for Blackpool on 27th December 1954 in a 3-0 defeat at Portsmouth.. Jimmy became established in the first team in the 1955-1956 season. Jimmy appeared for the Football League XI and England U23's before making his full England debut against Brazil in front of 175,000 people in 1959. During his England career Jimmy captained his country no fewer than 15 times and represented England on 43 occasions. After leaving Blackpool Jimmy became manager of Bolton Wanderers leading them to the third division championship. In September 1974 Jimmy left Bolton to manage Leeds United where he took his side to the 1975 European Cup Final. Jimmy ended his management career in 1978 to become a full time journalist.
Alan Ball
After being rejected as a young boy by both Wolves and Bolton Alan's father Alan Snr persuaded Blackpool to 'give his boy a chance'. Alan made his debut for Blackpool in August 1962 aged 17 against Liverpool at Anfield. In the following 12 months Alan made his name in the team and became a regular in the first team and was the clubs leading scorer in the 1963-63 season scoring 13 goals. Alan made his England debut in May 1965 against Yugoslavia and followed up this cap by becoming a regular England international. Alan was a member of the 1966 world cup winning team and by the time his England career had ended he had picked up 76 England caps. Alan left Blackpool in August 1966 signing for Everton for £110,000 on the back of England's World Cup win. Alan had success at Everton as part of the side that led them to the league title in 1969-70. Upon leaving Everton Alan headed to the capital to join Arsenal and then on to Southampton in March 1976. Alan turned his hand to management in 1980 by becoming manager of the Seasiders. This was not as successful as his playing career and spent only 12 months in charge of Blackpool F.C. Alan pulled his boots on a few more times for Southampton and Bristol Rovers before becoming manager of Portsmouth, Stoke City, Exeter City, Southampton and Manchester City before returning to Portsmouth for a second spell in charge.
Tony Green
Tony joined Blackpool from Albion Rovers in May 1967 for a sum of £15,000. Tony made his debut in the 3-1 home defeat by West Brom and still despite this defeat Tony was cheered from the field. Tony was not on the scoresheet often but was a great provider of goals for Gerry Ingham and Alan Skirton. Tony suffered an injury and missed the whole of 1969-70 season. Tony made his international debut for Scotland as a substitute against Greece. He represented his country 6 times. Tony left Blackpool to move to the North East and join Newcastle for £150,000. Tony was forced to quit the game after a knee ligament complaint. Months of surgery couldn't help and Tony was forced to hang up his boots for the final time. Tony then moved back to the Fylde coast and became a schoolteacher.
Ray Charnley
Ray was playing for Morecombe when his was spotted and signed by Blackpool manager Joe Smith in May 1957. He made his debut in the 1957-58 season against Luton Town in a 2-0 defeat. From the 1958-1959 season Ray was top scorer for the season which started the run of five consecutive seasons as leading scorer. The 1961-1962 saw Ray score his highest number of goals in one season finding the net on 36 occasions. Ray had scored 222 goals in 407 appearances when he was transferred to Preston North End and found himself on the scoresheet nine day later for Preston when he scored against the seasiders. After leaving Preston, Ray had a spell at Wrexham before hanging up his boots with Bradford Park Avenue.
Glyn James
Glyn made his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End in October 1960. Although he played in the following game Glyn's appearances were limited and he had to wait a long four years before becoming a regular in the Blackpool side. Glyns performances in the defence helped Blackpool return to first division in the 1969-1970 season. Glyn unfortunately was injured for the 1971 Anglo-Italian Cup Final victory. After the injuries mounted at Bloomfield Road Glyn found himself playing at centre forward and rewarded manager Bob Stokoe with six goals in five games and followed that up with another couple a few games later. Glyn returned to his normal position when Keith Dyson arrived. Glyns last game in a tangerine shirt was against Fulham in January 1975. In Glyns fifteen years at Bloomfield Road he made 446 appearances and scored 25 goals and was rewarded with a testimonial for his long service to the club. During his career Glyn managed to earn nine caps for his native Wales with his debut being against Brazil in 1965.
